For the past several years, the Rotary Club of San Francisco West has sponsored five orphans with a full scholarship to Luis Eguigren Elementary School in Quito, Ecuador. The scholarships pay for school supplies, uniforms, and room and board. We partnered with the local Rotary club in Quito for this school project.
The Rotary Club of San Francisco West funded the rehabilitation of a community health center in Palenque, Panama. Our funding went toward plumbing, with further repairs in the future.
The Rotary Club of San Francisco West funded the construction of a ten latrines in Terial, Panama, a community of 350 people. These modern outhouses are designed to reduce odors and keep out insects.
When the Shriner’s Hospital at 19th Avenue and Moraga closed, the Rotary Club of San Francisco West arranged to salvage thousands of dollars worth of medical equipment, including wheelchairs, gurneys, and operating room equipment. We paired with a Rotary Club in Bangladesh and shipped the goods to them, at no cost to their club. The equipment was then donated to hospitals in Bangladesh.
In a similar program, the Rotary Club of San Francisco West gathered surplus medical supplies from hospitals in the Bay Area, and crated and shipped the supplies to a Rotary Club in Sri Lanka for distribution there.
Rotary International is the largest non-governmental source of funding for the eradication of polio. The task is nearly complete; as of 2006 there are only four countries in the world with new polio infections: Nigeria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. The Polio Plus goal was to completely eradicate polio by 2005, the 100th anniversary of the founding of Rotary. The goal was not met, and the effort will continue until polio is eradicated. The Rotary Club of San Francisco West is proud to support Polio Plus.
Rotaplast provides free reconstructive surgery and treatment for underprivileged children worldwide suffering from cleft lip and palate. As of 2002, Rotaplast has reconstructed the mouths of 4000 children. The Rotary Club of San Francisco West has provided financial support to Rotaplast.
Rotary Foundation’s humanitarian programs fund international projects to improve the quality of life, providing health care, clean water, food, education, and other essential needs primarily in the developing world. Most of our members make voluntary annual donations to the Rotary Foundation.
